It is among China’s largest, oldest and most influential civilian research institutes for international studies. Located in Beijing, the Institute is affiliated with China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS), and overseen by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. Its activities include: providing reports to government departments, publishing research in academic jour- nals, carrying out projects on commission from the PRC government, conducting joint research projects with domestic and foreign institutions, promoting academic exchanges, offering Master’s and PhD programs. Research institutes: CICIR comprises 15 distinct research institutes, each with its own regional/functional focus • Institute of American Studies: is one of the largest and most influential institute in China covering U.S. • Institute of Eurasian Studies: focuses on comprehensive studies of Russia and Central Asia. • Institute of Northeast Asian Studies: is focusing on Japan and Korean Peninsula issues. The institute car- ries out research in the fields of politics, economy, diplomacy, security. • Institute of South Asian Studies: is dedicated to national research of South Asian Studies • Institute of Southeast Asian and Oceanian Studies • Institute of Latin-American Studies: Sino-Latin American relations and the role of Taiwan, position of Latin countries on UN reform of energy and climate change • Institute of European Studies: EU policies’ towards China, Sino-EU relationships and partnerships in trade, economics and politics, EU-NATO, Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, transitions in EU • Institute of Middle East Studies: is engaged in the research on the strategies, policies and dynamics of the twenty-two countries in West Asia and North Africa. • Institute of African Studies: politics, economy, security and societies, Sino-African relations, African stu- dies of the major countries • Institute of Hong Kong and Macao Studies (Established in January 2004): is one of the key institutions in mainland China that focuses on the Hong Kong and Macao issues. • Institute of Security and Arms Control Studies: carries out research on unconventional security, arms control and nuclear non-proliferation. • Institute of World Political Studies: aims to gain overall views of comprehensive strategic issues, focusing on international strategic situation, international security risk assessment • Institute of World Economic Studies: focuses on the current situation and trends of the future development of the world economy. • Institute of Cyber Security Studies: is one of the earliest institutions to engage in relevant research.
