Borned as a result of the merger of five smaller institutes on international relations, the Clingendael’s initial goal was enhancing public debate on international affairs. Today the institute is the leading Dutch think tank on diplomatic academy and international affairs. Its main areas of expertise are economic diplomacy, international security and conflict management. The Clingendael also specifically focuses on security and Europe, and the position of the Netherlands on the international scene. The institute has an important influence on public opinion thanks to its advisory capacity to the Dutch government, parliament, public organisations and the media. • Security and Defence: focuses on the nature of security challenges for the world, Europe and the Nether- lands and the ability to deal with them.
