Drawing on the expertise of its own research fellows, as well as that of external specialists, both Belgian and foreign, it provides analysis and policy options that are meant to be as operational as possible. The main activities of the Egmont Institute include research, the organisation of events, and training for civil servants. The Institute is associated to the Foreign Ministry of Belgium, from which it receives a substantial part of its funding. • Director General: Joan VERBEKE, former Ambassador to the UK (2010-13) and to the USA (2014-16) • Executives Director: Marina CRUYSMANS, former assistant to the Director General and conferences project manager in the International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IIAS). • Chairman: Etienne DAVIGNON, former Vice-President of the European Commission The Egmont Institute furthermore receives funding from EU Institutions, membership fees and private partners • The Egmont Institute takes part in numerous projects and networks, in collaboration with other research centers. It is a lead partner in the European Strategic Partnerships Observatory and l’Observatoire de l’Afrique. • In 2012, the Egmont Institute and the European Defence Agency launched the PhD Prize in European Defence, Security and Strategy. • Key topics: European defence/NATO, Terrorism, Belgian diplomacy, Energy and climate, EU economic affairs, EU institutional affairs, EU strategic partners, EU strategy and foreign policy, Internal EU policies • Key regional topics: Central Africa, Other African regions, Middle-East/North Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America Programmes: • Africa: The main objective is to conduct research on political, economic, social and security issues and developments relating to Central and Eastern Africa. • Europe in the word: the programme starts from the firm assumption that the development of the European Union as an autonomous international actor in all areas of external action is a positive evolution. • European Affairs: situated in Brussels at the heart of EU political decision-making, the Programme aims to provide in-depth as well as policy-oriented analyses on a wide range of topics of relevance to EU policy-makers.
